Which code to use

Addresses

ON

The two-letter code from Canada Post is what goes on mailing addresses and in most address forms. It is the same in English and French.

Statistics

35

The SGC number is the two-digit province code used in Statistics Canada data. Its first digit groups provinces by region.

Data exchange

CA-ON

Statistics Canada lists this as the “internationally approved alpha code”. It has the form used by ISO 3166-2 for Canada, but we could not open ISO’s own page to confirm it.

Ont.

The traditional abbreviations differ between English and French in many places, such as Que. and Qc, or B.C. and C.-B.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything sent when I search?

No. The filter runs in your browser on a table already on the page.

Why do some English and French abbreviations differ?

Statistics Canada lists separate traditional abbreviations for each language, for example Alta. and Alb., or N.S. and N.-É. The two-letter Canada Post code is the same in both.

What do the SGC numbers mean?

They come from Statistics Canada’s Standard Geographical Classification. The first digit groups provinces by region: 1 Atlantic, 2 Quebec, 3 Ontario, 4 Prairies, 5 British Columbia, 6 Territories.

Is this the same as the ISO code?

The CA- codes match the “internationally approved alpha code” in Statistics Canada’s table. We could not reach ISO to confirm it directly, so treat the ISO label as unconfirmed.

Does it include municipalities or postal prefixes?

No. It covers the 10 provinces and 3 territories only. For the first letter of a postal code, see the postal code validator.

How we check it

Every row of the table is compared with Statistics Canada’s SGC 2021 Table B in English and in French: SGC number, names, traditional abbreviation and CA- code. The two-letter codes were compared with Canada Post’s list.

The tests also check that there are 10 provinces and 3 territories, that codes are unique, and that search and lookup ignore accents, case and punctuation.

Limits: we compared against the published pages by reading them, not against a machine-readable download. We did not reach ISO’s own page, so the “ISO 3166-2” label is based on Statistics Canada’s description only.
