Canadian phone number formatter

Paste a phone number in any common writing and get it in Canada.ca style, with the area code matched to its province or territory.

Any punctuation, +1 or 1 in front, and “ext.”, “x” or “poste” for an extension.
Type a ten-digit phone number
  • This formats the number and reads the area code. It cannot tell you whether the number is in service or who holds it.

The number you type never leaves this page. It is formatted in your browser: nothing is sent, stored or logged.

The Canada.ca style

The Government of Canada style guide writes phone numbers with hyphens, no brackets, and a spelled-out extension.

Announced but not in service

These codes appear in the CNAC table but are not in service, so the formatter treats them as unassigned.

The table lists 55 codes; its own footer says 56, and we could not reconcile the difference. Area codes also change by overlay, so check the CNAC for a new one.

Frequently asked questions

Is the number I type sent anywhere?

No. The formatting is a few lines of JavaScript on this page. Nothing is sent, stored or logged.

Does the area code tell me where the person is?

Only roughly, and only where the number was first assigned. Mobile numbers move with their owners, so the province is where the area code belongs, not where the phone is.

Why does 902 show two provinces?

Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island share area codes 902 and 782. Likewise 867 serves Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut together.

Does it work for US numbers?

It formats any ten-digit North American number, but the province lookup only knows Canadian area codes. A US code is flagged as not on the Canadian list.

What about toll-free numbers?

A toll-free number such as 1-800 is written in the same pattern and formats fine, but it has no province, and this tool marks it as not on the Canadian list.

How we check it

The area code table is compared with the CNAC history table, including the count per province (Ontario 19, Quebec 12, British Columbia 6, Alberta 5) and the four codes not yet in service.

Formatting is tested on seven common writings of one number, on extensions in English and French, and on rejection of the wrong length and leading digits.

Limits: we apply the Canada.ca style as we read it, without a separate implementation to compare against. The CNAC footer total differs from the number of rows by one. We do not check whether a number is in service, and toll-free and special codes are not recognised as Canadian.
