How minimum wage works
Employment standards are mostly provincial. Each government sets its own rate and its own indexing rule.
Which rate applies
Most employees follow the rate of the province or territory where they work. Employees of federally regulated businesses follow the Canada Labour Code, but never earn less than the local provincial rate.
Indexed rates
Several governments adjust the rate every year with inflation. When the new amount is not yet announced, this page says so rather than guessing.
Paid by the hour, in practice
Salaried employees are covered too: divide the salary by the hours actually worked to see whether it reaches the minimum.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest minimum wage in Canada?
Nunavut, at $20.17 per hour since September 1, 2026. The highest provincial rate is British Columbia at $18.25; the federal rate is $18.15.
Which minimum wage applies if I work for a bank or an airline?
Federally regulated employers must pay the higher of the federal minimum wage ($18.15) and the provincial minimum wage where the employee works.
Are there minimum wage changes coming soon?
Prince Edward Island moves to $17.60 on April 1, 2027. Several other governments review their rate each year; check the source links for the new amount once it is announced.
Does the minimum wage include tips?
No, tips are not part of the wage. Quebec is the one listed here with a lower rate for employees who regularly receive tips ($13.30).
Are the Prince Edward Island and Yukon figures reliable?
The Prince Edward Island figure comes from the province’s published order in council. The Yukon and Nunavut government sites block automated checks, so those two figures were confirmed from the territories’ published announcements and secondary reports; confirm with the source link before relying on them.

How we check
Every rate in the table was read from the government page listed under Official sources and compared with it figure by figure. The tests assert those same figures, plus the arithmetic of the pay converter against hand calculations (for example $17.95 × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $37,336.00).
Limits: the tests cannot detect a rate change published after November 1, 2026, and the Yukon and Nunavut sites could not be opened by our automated link check, so those two were confirmed from search summaries of the official announcements. Annual pay assumes 52 paid weeks. This page is not legal advice.
