How it works
Natural Resources Canada rates vehicles in litres per 100 kilometres, so the calculator works in that unit.
litres = km × (L/100 km) ÷ 100
cost = litres × price per litre500 km × 8 ÷ 100 = 40 L; 40 L × $1.50 = $60.00L/100 km = 282.481 ÷ mpg (imperial)
L/100 km = 235.215 ÷ mpg (US)30 mpg (US) is 7.84 L/100 kmReal fuel use changes with speed, load, temperature, tires, traffic and driving style. Your label rating is a test result, not a promise. Tolls, parking and wear are not included. Your own tank-to-tank figure is the best number to enter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my vehicle’s L/100 km?
Use the EnerGuide label or Natural Resources Canada’s Fuel Consumption Guide for the rated figure. For the most honest number, fill the tank, note the odometer, drive normally, then refill: litres added ÷ kilometres driven × 100.
Which rating should I use, city or highway?
Use the one that matches the trip. NRCan’s combined rating assumes 55% city and 45% highway driving, so for a mixed trip the combined figure is a fair start.
How do I convert mpg to L/100 km?
Divide 282.481 by imperial mpg, or 235.215 by US mpg. Canadian vehicles are often shown in imperial mpg, and US sources use US mpg, so check which you have. The calculator accepts all three.
Does the price include tax?
It uses whatever price you type. Pump prices already include fuel taxes and GST/HST, so enter the posted price.
Can I split the cost?
Yes. Set the number of people and the per-person share is shown, rounded to the nearest cent.

How we check it
Tests compare the calculator with hand calculations, including a 500 km, 8 L/100 km, $1.50 per litre trip ($60.00) and a 20 000 km, 10 L/100 km, $1.80 per litre year ($3,600.00). The mpg constants (282.481 and 235.215) are checked against the exact gallon and mile definitions in the sources above.
Money is handled in cents and rounded half up once, at the end. The calculator does not look up pump prices, so the price field starts with an example, not today’s price. We could not confirm a current national average price from an official source, so we do not show one.
Limits: the result is an estimate that depends on the fuel use you enter. Tolls, parking, maintenance and depreciation are not included.
