Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for Express Entry?

It depends on family size. As of IRCC’s table updated July 7, 2025: $15,263 for one person, $19,001 for two, $23,360 for three, $28,362 for four, $32,168 for five, $36,280 for six and $40,392 for seven, plus $4,112 for each additional member.

Who counts as a family member?

You, your spouse or common-law partner, your dependent children, and your spouse or partner’s dependent children. IRCC says to include them even if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, or are not coming with you.

Do I need proof of funds under the Canadian Experience Class?

No. You also do not need it if you are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer. IRCC’s system still asks everyone for a document, so those applicants upload a letter explaining which case applies.

Can I use borrowed money or the equity in my home?

No. IRCC says you cannot use equity on real property or money borrowed from another person. You must be able to legally access the money in Canada and use it for your family’s costs of living.

How often do the amounts change?

Every year. IRCC bases them on 50% of the low income cut-off totals. The table on IRCC’s page was last updated July 7, 2025, as of November 1, 2026.

When must I have the money?

When you apply and when IRCC issues your permanent resident visa, if your application is approved.

How we check it

Automated tests (Node’s built-in test runner) compare every amount from one to seven family members with IRCC’s table, check the amount for sizes above seven against IRCC’s per-member figure, and check the family-size rule and the boundary at one cent.

Limits: IRCC publishes no worked examples above seven members, so those amounts are arithmetic on its rule. The table is the July 7, 2025 edition; we have not seen a later one.
